Entangled Chimes
2017
Entangled Chimes are two identical sets of instruments in different spaces of the show. Each instrument has 5 chimes of different lengths. There is a microcontroller and electronics on each instrument. A mallet is provided for the audience to play them. Occasionally, the instrument appears to play itself.
Each instrument has vibration sensors to detect when it is struck. This information is broadcasted via 433mhz radio. When one instrument detects that the other instrument is being played, it replays those sounds using electromagnets.
The installation invites us to consider what is lost when we pursue ever higher fidelity forms of communication, whether it’s HD video or 5G internet. Entangled Chimes allows us to transmit raw sound, without servers or satellites, crossing physical, political boundaries. While the reliability and speed of language is lost, perhaps emotional clarity is gained.
